Wind energy is really good for the environment. It's renewable, and wind is everywhere. Wind isn't a fossil fuel, so we aren't wasting any resources. There is only so much oil, coal, and natural gas within the Earth, so we need other sources of energy, and wind is an excellent choice. Wind will be around forever.
Pros~~Clean energy
~Renewable and sustainable ~Costs are pretty low and continue to go down ~Can be used in most places ~Low carbon footprint ~No impact on water, air emmisions, and very little impact on the land around it |
Cons~~Wind is inconsistent, unsteady, and unpredictable
~Wind turbine installation is expensive ~Turbines make a lot of noise and make natural landscapes look ugly ~Animals, like birds and bats, can get killed if they get in the turbines |
People are hesitant to start using wind as an electricity resource because of the possibility of it not being windy on some days. If there is no wind blowing, the utility provides electricity for you. Also, if there is extra electricity that the turbine generates, it is sent back to the utility system to be used by a neighbor.
Wind turbine controversy in bird regions:
Erie Township, a town by Lake Erie, has recently put in a couple of wind turbines. Some people are really angry about it because the turbines can harm birds, bats, and the noise can drive tourists away.
I think we should take more precaution with turbine placement in bird regions. I still stand by my belief that wind energy is a good resource, but I think people should really take note about not putting up multiple wind turbines in a place where there a lot of birds.
